Years ago when I was in Boy Scouts, one of the key requirements was to memorize and LIVE BY the Scout Law. For some reason today, those 12 points were running through my mind. But, with a twist. Every one of those points can be applied to a Christian life. Below, I've listed the 12 points of the Scout law, but I've modified the terminology descriptions to fit a Christian life.
The Scout Law, revised for Christians (I don't think Lord Powell will be upset with me using it)
1) TRUSTWORTHY - A Christian tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend on him.- Just as Christ never lied or deceived
2) LOYAL - A Christian is true to God, his family (Both Blood and In Christ), friends, school, and nation.- Just as Christ was so dedicated to us that he was willing to go through a painful death for us.
3) HELPFUL - A Christian is concerned about other people. He does things willingly for others without pay or reward. - Just as Christ was willing to serve others
4) FRIENDLY - A Christian is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Christians. He seeks to understand others. He respects those with ideas and customs other than his own.- Just as Christ was a friend to all, even the sinners.
5) COURTEOUS - A Christian is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows good manners make it easier for people to get along together. - Christ never tried to "Pull Rank" on any one, always willing to wait his turn and showing respect for his elders.
6) KIND - A Christian understands there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. He does not hurt or kill harmless things without reason.- Just as Christ was willing to wash the feet of his Deciples.
7) OBEDIENT - A Christian obeys the rules of his God & family. He obeys the laws of his community and country; If he thinks these laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them. - Even Christ tells us to give unto Creaser what is Creaser and Give unto God what is God's. That means if the law says to do something, do it but don't use as as an excuse to not obey God.
8) CHEERFUL - A Christian looks for the bright side of things. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy. - Even on the eve of his betrayal, Christ was willing to "Party" with his friends. At least, that's what I see the last supper as.
9) THRIFTY - A Christian works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for unforeseen needs. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property. - Christ taught the value of money and how not to waste it on material items that are not going to matter. I think of the old Ray Stevens song: "Would Jesus Wear A Rolex On His Television Show?"
10) BRAVE - A Christian can face danger even if he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him. - Christ could have run from the Roman Guards, he could have stopped the torture and his crucifixion at anytime, but he braved the pain all the way to the grave - all for us.
11) CLEAN - A Christian keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his home and community clean.- Just as the blood of Christ has washed us clean of our sins.
12) REVERENT - A Christian is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others.- This point of focus is exactly why Christ ran the money changers out of the temple.
